Sound Design and Musical Composition for Dance

This is one area of theatrical sound design that I have, in the past five years, come to love most of all. From my MFA thesis project Andy's Hat with choreographer Dr. Darwin Prioleau to the simplest arrangement of dripping water sounds for choreographer Chung Fu Chang, it has been the most creative situation that I have ever experienced. Here are some photos of two of many sound designs for dance. Click the resume link on the left for a more complete listing.

Journey to the Mountaintop

Choreography by Dr. Darwin Prioleau

This was a fascinating piece that combined the recorded music of jazz greats such as Nina Simone and Nat Adderly with the very rhythmic and musical speeches Dr. Martin Luther King.

Believe

Choreography by

Kim Karpenty

Believe captured both the humorous and very serious sides of the questions pertaining to the nature and existence of UFO's. It used the voices of scientists over jazz rock fusion band UFO, the theme from Fireball XL5, selected John Williams music from Lost in Space, my musical arrangement of Star Trek sound effects and my original music transitions to provide a very believable and cohesive sound track to a powerful and entertaining dance piece.
